Dev Chat Summary for Dec 2, 2013

    Chat log

This is the log from the short dev chat earlier today.

    Agenda

    • iOS Update
    • Android Update
    • This Week

    iOS Update

Last week 3.8.5 went into serious RC testing and went through three versions. This is the last update to support iOS 6 and it’s a hot fix update. Meanwhile work is progressing on the next major version of WordPress for iOS, version 3.9 which has some major UX improvements all around the app as well as tons of clean up.

    Android Update

We’re working away on version 2.6 and unifying the appearance around the WordPress.com Reader and the log in/sign up process.

    This Week

iOS: RC testing 3.8.5 and release, continue development on 3.9. If 3.8.5 is unstable we may need to issue a 3.8.6 release to ensure iOS 6 users have a stable app moving forward.

    Android: 2.6 Beta.

    Next Dev Chat

The next dev chat will be held at 17:00 UTC on Dec 9 in #wordpress-mobile on Freenode.

Handbook editing very nearly all done

I’ve checked through the handbook again and it’s looking good – thanks to everyone who’s completed pages or made changes.

There’s just one page that still needs some work, which is the Best Practices page for Windows Phone. This page ends very abruptly and as a non-expert reader it left me a little confused as to what to do next. Can a sentence or two be added to round this off? Also it has a section on Accessibility which is currently empty and needs some text.

@Eric – do you mind making those final tweaks and then we’ll be all done?

    Thanks :)

Thanks Rachel! That’s great to hear. I’ll look at making those two updates later today. :)

I’ve updated the Best Practices page. I’ve added a short one line intro and a closing section. I’ve removed the Accessibility section. I’m not really sure what was meant to go there. We’ll revisit it if we need to in the future.

    Tags: , , library

The team is working on improving the next Android and iOS apps. We recently released a cross platform email checking library that helps us to detect typos in email domain name.

The library is written in C++ with Java and Objective-C bindings for Android and iOS projects. Check the github page: https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/EmailChecker

Future iOS and Android versions will use that to auto-correct email addresses during sign up in order to lower the number of bounced welcome emails.

It’s dual licensed under GPL v2 and MIT licenses, we hope to see it used in other mobile projects soon!

Dev Chat Summary for Nov 18, 2013

    Chat log.

    Agenda

    • iOS Summary
    • Android Summary
    • Handbook
    • Next This Week

    iOS Summary

3.8.4 was finally submitted to Apple for review, it was stuck in QA for quite some time. Meanwhile work has progressed towards the next bug fix update, 3.8.5. We’ll try to wrap it up as quickly as possible so as to pick up the release pace (3.8.4 took much longer than expected).

Beyond bug fixes, some exciting things are happening in the 3.9 release milestone, the UI is being simplified and a tab bar interface is being considered as well as general clean up and big performance improvements.

    Android Summary

We released 2.5 last week! Some problems with Stats + Jetpack, and some users didn’t like the new look but overall a smooth release. Bugs and UI fixes are going into 2.5.1 which is now in QA — help test!

2.6 is the next big release with the new NUX flow and the native WordPress.com Reader. We’re finetuning these to be in better sync with the iOS app, expect a beta within a few weeks.

    Handbook

The whole handbook is now ready or ready to be reviewed with the exception of the iOS section. @sendhil has promised once again to take a look.

    This Week

    • iOS: get 3.8.5 ready! [and keep working on 3.9]
    • Android: QA test 2.5.1, continue 2.6 development

    Next Chat

The next dev chat will be held at 17:00 UTC on Nov 25 in #wordpress-mobile on Freenode.

Where do you submit bug reports for the Android ap? I can’t seem to moderate comments on self hosted blogs. (They are up to date WP installs on 2 different webhosts)

Hey everyone – quick update for the iOS app. We are making it official, but we’ve decided to stop tracking issues through Trac and are now tracking everything through Github issues.

As a part of this transition, we’ve migrated over all the open issues from Trac and added them to Github with the trac label. If you want to chip in and help, report a bug, or suggest a feature, go ahead and open up an issue through Github.

Handbook update: looks like the Other Apps and Other Apps/webOS pages are ready to be reviewed. This means the entire Handbook is done pending changes by @sendhil for the iOS section.

    We’re on the home stretch!

    FYI @rachel_mccollin

    • This week

    iOS Lead Switch

@koke has decided to let go of the iOS dev lead reigns and we’re passing the torch to @sendhil.

    iOS Summary

We’ve been testing version 3.8.4. During testing we’ve identified a few issues that were blockers, applied fixes and restarted the testing clock. We’re currently on release candidate 3 with a fourth planned.

    Work has started on 3.8.5.

We’re conducting an issue review. All issues are being assigned to milestones, and we’ll be migrating any remaining, relevant Trac tickets into Github.

    Android Summary

We’re doing a phased rollout of version 2.5 today, starting at 20% and bumping to 100% if all goes well.

A few fixes are planned for 2.5.1 which should go into QA this week.

Work on 2.6 (NUX and Reader) continues with some UI tweaks being made to both features.

Issues are being assigned to milestones.

    Handbook

Sendhil is committed to taking a look at the last remaining bits in the iOS section this week.
The webOS section under Other Apps needs some attention but otherwise the handbook looks complete.

    This Week

iOS: Wrap up 3.8.4 and move forward with 3.8.5.
Android: Announce 2.5, get 2.5.1 into QA and continue to make progress on 2.6.

    Next Dev Chat

The next dev chat will be held at 17:00 UTC on Nov 18 in #wordpress-mobile on Freenode. Mark your calendars and make sure to update the time. This is 9AM PST.
