The history of Railway Gazette International

Railway Gazette International traces its history back to May 1 1835, when the first issue of The Railway Magazine appeared at the very dawn of the railway era.

One of the first periodicals in the world dedicated to the spread of knowledge within a specific industry, The Railway Magazine underwent four changes of name during the boom years of railways to become Herapath’s Railway Journal in January 1894.

The Railway Gazette appeared in July 1905, and in April 1914 merged with The Railway Times, which incorporated Herapath.

From the 1920s until the 1960s, The Railway Gazette became synonymous with railway developments throughout the world, with close links to the British Empire and other railways founded on British technology and exports. During this time The Railway News and The Railway Engineer were absorbed into the title. The journal’s world-wide perspective was underlined by a change of name to Railway Gazette International in October 1970.

The railwaygazette.com website launched in June 1997.

Reflecting the transition to advanced motive power, The Railway Gazette published the specialist title Diesel Railway Traction between 1933 and 1964.

In November 1934 another specialist supplement was launched: Overseas Railways. Later known as Developing Railways, this was absorbed into Rail Business Report in 1994.

A second annual supplement was launched in 1985 to serve the urban railway industry: Developing Metros, which was renamed Metro Report in 1998 and later Metro Report International. It was integrated with Railway Gazette International in 2025.

In parallel with the development of its magazine portfolio, Railway Gazette Group also acquired The Directory of Railway Officials and The Railway Yearbook, which were merged to form the Railway Directory & Yearbook – the definitive ‘red book’ – which later became known by the shorter title Railway Directory. A CD-ROM edition of Railway Directory first appeared in 1997, and the CD was succeeded by railwaydirectory.net in 2001. Content is now integrated into the Railway Gazette website.

The fortnightly newsletter Rail Privatisation News was launched in 1995 to provide business information and analysis in the complex and rapidly-developing process of transferring Britain’s railways into the private sector. Such was the title’s success that it continued to play a role for the post-privatisation railway, which was reflected by a change of name in March 1998 to Rail Business Intelligence. British industry news is now published online as Rail Business UK, which was launched in September 2019 and moved to its own website in April 2026.

The Railway Gazette Group remains firmly committed to serving the world’s railway industry – reporting news, analysing trends and campaigning for development and investment wherever rail has a role to play.
