New package with a core/widget-types store for registering and querying widget types. Surface-agnostic — any surface (dashboard, sidebar, etc.) can consume registered types. Store: createReduxStore( 'core/widget-types' ) Actions: registerWidgetType( name, settings ), unregisterWidgetType( name ) Selectors: getWidgetTypes(), getWidgetType( name ) Registration validates name format (namespace/name), required fields (title, render_module), and applies the widgets.registerWidgetType filter for third-party extensibility.
Reads window.__registeredWidgetTypes (injected by PHP), dynamically imports each widget_module to get metadata, then calls registerWidgetType() for each. Imports run in parallel via Promise.all(). Individual failures are caught and skipped silently.
Add wpScriptModuleExports so the package is available in the browser import map. Required for route ESM imports.
make render_module and widget_module optional in the registry interface, guard widget_module import with null check, and fallback render_module to empty string when absent
convert registerWidgetType to thunk for duplicate check, add sideEffects declaration to prevent tree-shaking, document architecture and known concerns in README
these properties describe how a widget behaves within a layout context (dimensions, position, padding, scroll), not what the widget is — they belong to the surface layer
remove re-exports of actions, selectors, STORE_NAME, and WidgetTypesState — consumers use dispatch/select(store)
explain the two levels of coupling (identity vs wiring), why the page filter exists, and how multiple surfaces consume the same widget types
add WidgetName + WidgetTypeMetadata; map render_module at PHP boundary

Adds the widget-types data layer for the customizable dashboard work — a
@wordpress/datastore, runtime types, and a bootstrap helper for registering widget types from a build manifest.Part of the Dashboard Overview #77616 and #77625.
Companion to #77629 (the
widget.jsonschema) and #77576 (the wp-build pipeline).Why?
A first iteration of the registry, opened so reviewers can weigh in early on shape and contract before the surrounding pieces (build pipeline, dashboard surface) start consuming it. Three things to call out:
routes/dashboard/widget-types/to keep the API surface private while it stabilizes — the contract is still under discussion and freezing it into a public@wordpress/widget-typespackage now would lock in shape decisions prematurely. The internal layout (index.ts,bootstrap.ts,types.ts,store/) is already shaped so that promoting topackages/widget-types/once the contract settles is a file move, not a rewrite.core/widget-types. This is part of the public contract once consumers start landing — keeping it stable now means the eventual promotion to a package is rename-free.How?
