Just checking I understand... this sets the new image after a crop? And the second setAttributes sets the metadata?
When the media editor saves crop plus metadata changes, would it make sense for the image block to receive one block update?

Conceptually, yes, I'll have a play. One thing that could be an edge case for this is that it might take slightly longer to perform the second setAttributes as we have to wait for the refreshed item to resolve 🤔
So two calls means we can update the image itself first, and then do the metadata. But having said that out loud, I think you're right that a single call would be better!

This is working pretty much how I'd expect it to given that the image block stores it's own, individual overrides. It seems like a limitation of the image block itself that it doesn't explain how the attachment default vs image block attribute value override work. Nothing to change here. Removing the caption/alt text on the block persists, and the attachment record's values only appear if you update via the modal 👍🏻 I was mainly looking to see if the new values could be set on the attributes all at once to avoid any async issues, but in practice I didn't run into any |

Cheers, I appreciate the review and feedback! It turned out to be pretty straightforward to consolidate (I've pushed that in ccc8ac8). I was wondering if it would cause a timing / race condition issue with waiting for the entity to resolve, but even with network throttling active it turns out that's not the slow bit. The slow bit is actually just downloading the updated image, so I didn't notice a subjective difference between one or two I did a quick re-test locally and I think it's all still working as expected, so I'll aim to land this once the tests pass 🙂 |

What's the reason for making this chained data fetch? At the moment, it's making two requests for the same data. Chaining the selector doesn't stop resolvers from firing.
- The first
getEditedEntityRecordwill use the same resolver as the lastgetEntityRecord. - The middle selector triggers a different request because of
ATTACHMENT_EDIT_QUERY. What's the special case for this? IIRC,view: defaultis the edit context for attachments and most of the post types.

I just discovered __experimentalGetEntityRecordNoResolver: would that be better to use for the first call? Then fall back to an async resolve?

Thanks for catching this! From memory I added in the chaining while debugging getting access to the raw versions of the caption and alt text (naively attempting to grab things that had already resolved), and forgot to come back to tidy it up 🤦

I think just using getEditedEntityRecord should be good enough. If data isn't in store, it will fetch it, and edited data is always mapped to raw values.
I would suggest avoiding complex logic or __experimentalGetEntityRecordNoResolver here.

With the experimental media editor modal, once an update has been performed (with or without a crop), ensure that any updated captions or alt text are propagated through.
Why?
In this flow, where a user is directly using the modal, making changes to the media item itself can be treated as an implicit "I want these changes to appear in the block" since the modal was launched from the block.
Without syncing, it feels like you've updated something in one place, and it has broken. With syncing, it should feel transparent to the user that they updated something in one place and it just works.

In terms of technical implementation we add a
useOpenImageMediaEditorModalhook that asbtracts away the syncing logic, and performs the appropriate entity checks before and after the modal opens (along with invalidating resolution) in order to do the comparison and thensetAttributesas appropriate.Testing Instructions
With the Media Editor Modal experiment active:
Testing that it only syncs when a user makes a change
Testing that it syncs when values match the REST API endpoint
Testing that it doesn't override user changes within the image block
